My name is Arael and I am the owner and lead tile installer at Ascend Custom Tile Installations.
My story began in Cuba but I grew up in the US after my mom won the visa lottery when i was 8 years old. I fluent in both Spanish and English. Hablamos espanol!
I grew up in Florida and stayed there until I relocated to San Diego in 2015.
The Tile Journey.
One day, my general contractor buddy called and asked if I could help him set some tile for the day.
At the time, I didn’t know much about tile. But growing up, I was always helping my dad with renovation projects around the house. His motto was the old saying, “If you want something done right, you’ve got to do it yourself.” I didn’t mind—I actually enjoyed helping most of the time.
So I told my friend, sure, I’ll help out. Figured, why not?
A chip off the old block.
In Cuba, my dad was a mechanical engineer. When we moved to the U.S., his credentials didn’t transfer, so he rolled up his sleeves and got to work.
He brought that same knowledge and determination into our personal lives, especially when it came to fixing up our home. I became his right-hand helper on every project. Eventually, he started his own construction business, which he ran for several years before the 2008 recession forced him to close its doors.
Even through that challenge, his passion for building never faded, and it left a lasting impact on me. His story, full of grit and ingenuity, is what shaped mine and laid the groundwork for the path I’ve followed ever since.The truth is, understanding how things work together is in my DNA.
I’ve always had an eye for design and a serious attention to detail.
Funny how life works, even with the most specific plan and blueprint, you never really know if the road you're on will lead you where you're meant to go. But the journey is always worth taking to find out.
I’m grateful to say that road led me to where I am now- San Diego, a city I’m proud to call home. Today, I have the privilege of serving my community as an independent, licensed, bonded, and insured tile contractor.
